Toledo Bathroom Remodel

Nobody likes to think about getting older, but there are some things you may want to keep in mind when it comes to remodeling your bathroom. If you’ve been thinking of updating your bathroom, and are inching closer to retirement, here are a couple tips to help you make choices you’ll appreciate down the road.

When arthritis sets into your knees, it may be more difficult to climb over the bathtub ledge to get into the shower. Today, there are options that are more user friendly for those who are looking to make mobility issues easier. A walk-in shower is a great idea for your bathroom redesign. Without having to climb over the bathtub, you have less risk of falling.

There are also special bathtubs with cut-outs to ease this frustration as well. Whether you’re looking for a bathtub or shower, there are items you might not be aware of. Let us show you the multitude of choices. One other tip worth noting is to add in a safety handrail if you have a fall risk in your family.

With mobility issues in mind, another area of consideration is the height of both your vanity and toilet. Today’s options are about convenience, which means rather than the standard height of a toilet, you can now get a raised seat. This can make it easier on backs and knees if you’re having trouble standing from a seated position. You can also add a handrail here as well. A vanity where the height is a smidge taller may help if bending over becomes uncomfortable due to back issues.

If you’ve got the available space, you might want to consider adding a bathroom to the ground floor, so you can avoid stairs when need be. Adding another bathroom to your home can also enhance the value of your real estate.

Two other quick things that can make a world of difference is to include better lighting, and to make sure slippery surfaces are non-slippery. That means putting in non-slip grips on the floor of a bathtub or shower, or non-slip carpeting with rubber backing on the floor.

What we’ve discussed so far:

  • Walk-in shower
  • Taller vanity
  • Toilet with higher seating
  • Safety handrails
  • Non-slip surfaces
  • Better lighting

What else might you want to consider? If you’ve got someone in the home with mobility issues, using a wheelchair or walker, you’ll want to make sure there’s room for them to turn around while in the bathroom. That means about five feet of space according to the American Disabilities Act. It’s easy to overlook the space needed to maneuver both inside and outside of a bathroom.

What about the bathroom door itself? Keep in mind the door width to accommodate those who need a wider entrance. Also consider door handles for those who have mobility issues or arthritis in their hands. Lever styled handles can be helpful, whereas traditional doorknobs may be harder for some seniors to turn and twist open.
