When you’re thinking of building and designing a deck, there are a few things to keep in mind. It may seem like common sense, but even little details that are overlooked can throw you off. You’ll want to look at the different materials available to you, what kind of maintenance is involved with those materials, along with the costs involved.
Where you live is as vital in your material choices as anything, due to the harsh elements that some environments create such as being in a coastal area such as the ocean. Salt air can be incredibly harsh on materials. Excess moisture in humid areas can also play havoc if you choose the wrong material.
What other things might you want to consider when designing a deck?
- What type of permits will you need? Are there certain codes you’ll need to follow, such as how far away from the property line do you have to be? How deep will your footings need to be due to geographical issues?
- What hardware will you choose? What type of spacing? What type of planks will work best? What direction do you want them running? What obstacles might you run into when leveling the deck? Will excavation be needed prior to the project?
- How will you protect your deck? Maintenance will be different based on your material choice. Will you simply need to pressure wash your deck, or does it need to be stained and sealed again—and how often?
With these things in mind, it can be mind-boggling to think how much goes into designing a deck. We often visualize the finished product, but not what goes into building of the structure. We’d love to help you get started. Give us a call, so we can discuss your deck design needs today.
